Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to present the status and social position of anthriopology/ethnology in Montenegro. Setting ethnology and anthropology in the institutional framework of Montenegro is a newly prompted process, even though preceded by several decades old assorted data collecting attempts and research work. Up until today, no monographs on the subject exist, nor there were any attempts to explain the relevance of anthropology/ethnology as a science. Therefore, this paper will present all available data on current projects and research, institutions, offices and memberships concerning this issue. Initially, the paper discusses current curriculum of the subject Ethnology at the Department of Sociology, Montenegrin University of Philosophy, activities and research of the Board of Ethnology, Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, status and proceedings of the Association of Ethnologists of Montenegro, Ethnographic Museum of Montenegro and several other museums at the local level. The main objective of this paper is to present the collected data to fellow anthropologists/ ethnologists in order to appraise the status of ethnology and anthropology as sciences in Montenegro; a discussion with fellow anthropolo-gists/ethnologists would also help to improve the position of ethnologists and anthropologists in Montenegro by supporting an individual and team work, peer control of standards and generally, a development of awareness about how important these sciences are.
