Summary/Abstract: The political and social changes that affected Bulgaria during the 1990’s greatly influenced everyday Bulgarian culture and the science of ethnology. Bulgarian ethnology mostly dealt with the past, but now the time has come to take steps toward the future, and change the scientific/practical and theoretical orientation of the discipline. Studying tradition remains one of the basic and important aims in every research, but tradition here is to be understood not as a ”living antiquity“ or passive cultural heritage but as a part of a contemporary culture. In this period, a special accent was put on current affairs, changes and everyday events. Likewise, it soon became possible to overcome the lack of studies about national and other minority groups. Initial steps have been made to study Bulgarian culture in foreign countries. All these important changes in the discipline established new methods in ethnology.
