Summary/Abstract: The past three decades (1975-2005) have witnessed a total change in the content, perspectives and methodology in Serbian ethnological science. The traditional ethnology, founded under the influence of the 19th century Romanticism, persisted during the first three quarters of the 20th century; gradually, it ceased to exist, only to be found today among the amateurish and semi-amateurish scope of tradition – and antique fans and some senior museologists. The main stream of the Serbian ethnology, established at universities and scientific institutions, focuses on modern society and its segments such as: ideology and politics, economy, urban life, globalization etc. These topics were not directly dealt with in the 19th century ethnology. If, however, the main stream focuses on traditional models as well, they are handled in ways and manners that are already elaborated and inspected in world science in the 20th century.
