Summary/Abstract: The text focuses on various alternatives for winning the political independence of the Bulgarian people. Since the beginning of the 15th century the main issue for the Bulgarian society were the ways and means for the liberation of Bulgaria. In the nineteenth century, the problem was already being discussed with particular vigor because of the irreversible crisis that had engulfed the Ottoman Empire. On this basis, the question of what type of independence and statehood Bulgarian society should strive for was intensively raised and debated. Whether to an autonomous province, or a dualistic state on the example of Austria-Hungary, a federation or confederation like Switzerland, or a one-nation state like France, Italy, Germany.
