Summary/Abstract: The article traces the social and politico-economic consequences of the industrial encouragement legislation in Bulgaria. Based on unpublished archival primary sources concerning the preparation of 1928 Law for the Encouragement of Local Industry, it was established that the stratum of industrial entrepreneurs became more active and categorically defended its interests before the state authorities. In general, they presented them as national, but in certain cases, they sought to restrict some local industrialists in favor of others. Representatives of various handicrafts felt faced with unfair competition and neglected by the state authorities. Thus, the tension between industrialists and craftsmen intensified. The preparation, adoption and implementation of the 1928 industry encouragement law of increased the importance of the political elite in the country. It imposed itself as a distributor of privileges, and industrial entrepreneurs had to contact its representatives. Thus, in practice, national unity was undermined by economic nationalism.
