Summary/Abstract: The political relations between Bulgaria and Japan are over 110 years old, and their economic ties are approaching a century-old anniversary. Bulgaria has a good partnership with Japan, both on the political and economic scene. Since 2007, when the country has become a member of the European Union (EU), there has been a visible growth in the Bulgarian export to Japan and Japanese export to Bulgaria. This paper is a study of the effect of our EU membership on bilateral trade with the Land of the Rising Sun through the prism of the Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan, signed in 2018 and in force since 2019. The two parties in this agreement have economic relationships worth about 200 billion euros in 2024 and it has been studied how Bulgaria has benefited from the advantages of the large economic union, of which it has been a member for 18 years.
