Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the importance and enhancement of reading skills in foreign language teaching, particularly at the intermediate to advanced language level. Reading literacy is understood as a complex skill that goes beyond mere recognition of written language and includes understanding, using, evaluating, and interpreting texts. The article emphasizes that good reading involves active strategies such as goal setting, selective reading, integration of prior knowledge, and metacognitive control. The interdependence between native and foreign language reading skills is also highlighted. Criteria for selecting reading texts and reading strategies are analyzed, as is the role of textbooks in th development of reading skills in German as a foreign language (DaF teaching. Overall, the paper demonstrates the complexity of the reading process and emphasizes the need for systematic promotion of reading skills at an advanced language level.
