Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the dynamics of the emergence and evolution of nonce words in contemporary Romanian, highlighting some of the particularities of these lexical innovations. It emphasizes that the lexicon is constantly changing, driven by social, political, economic, cultural, and othe changes, which generates the need for new lexical forms to name newly emerging realities. Although nonce words, as products of individual imagination, are initially created to express particular situations, some of them can be taken up and transmitted by imitation, becoming part of the linguistic heritage of the community. At the same time, their destiny is variable: some become part of the stable vocabulary, others remain in sporadic use, and most disappear after only one use. The study also explains some of the factors that determine the acceptance and viability of nonce words, such as the prestige of the creator, the necessity of the term, etc.
