Summary/Abstract: Approaching the life, work, and thinking of Father Arsenie Boca is a complex and particularly difficult, yet necessary, undertaking. Many books have been published about the life, miracles, and thinking of the Reverend Arsenie, with astonishing print runs. They have been distributed widely among believers, creating an image of the Father that is as confusing as it is contradictory. Father Arsenie's hesychastic image is marked by the philocalic spirit that he lived fully and that he wanted to imprint on monastic life at Sâmbăta de Sus and then at Prislop Monastery. Through Father Arsenie, monastic life in Transylvania sought its authentic Orthodox roots at a time when the Romanian Orthodox Church was confronted with the atheistic communist ideology that had been imposed on Romanian society since the beginning of the 20th century. Father Arsenie's theological writings, together with the Philokalia translated by Saint Dumitru Stăniloae, represent the resistance of authentic Orthodox spirituality and Romanian monasticism against the "non licet esse vos" of Romanian society.
