Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted primarily to Italian art in Polish literature. The first part discusses theoretical issues related to the definition of ekphrasis, the understanding of the category of intersemiotic translation, and the basic functions that can be attributed to literature corresponding to art. The second part of the article analyses selected poems and fragments of essays that illustrate Polish writers' interest in Italian art, but also show the formal and linguistic techniques that give them the character of “ekphrasis”. To this purpose, reference is made to works by Maria Konopnicka, Tadeusz Kubiak, Wisława Szymborska, Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, as well as to Zbigniew Herbert's essay Piero della Francesca.
