Summary/Abstract: This article examines George Coşbuc (1866–1918), a pivotal figure in Romanian classical literature, widely acknowledged as the “Poet of the Peasantry” for his nuanced and comprehensive artistic representation of rural life, including its natural rhythms, communal structures, and socio-economic tensions. The study focuses on the transcultural transfer and reception of Coşbuc’s work within the German speaking context, revealing a selective interpretive framework that has shaped his literary image abroad. Particular attention is given to the reinterpretation of his social critique, which has often been instrumentalized by cultural mediators to cast Coşbuc as a precursor of socialist realism. Employing a translation-cultural and reception-historical approach, the article reassesses Coşbuc’s polyvalent thematic range and his function as a literary mediator in Ger-man literary scholarship. A contrastive analysis of selected original poems and their German translations highlights the challenges of preserving prosodic features and culture-specific meanings across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
