Summary/Abstract: Asylum and migration policy has often been viewed as having limited potential for advancing European integration and Europeanisation due to its profound impact on national sovereignty. However, successive waves of migrants and refugees impacting the European Union have prompted the EU to expand its competencies and responsibilities in managing migration. These developments underscore asylum and migration policy as a critical area of interest for the study of Europeanisation, given its transnational nature and complex interactions with the national security interests of member states. In the case of Romania, both during the pre-accession and post-accession period to the European Union, the national migration and asylum policy underwent a process of Europeanisation, aimed at aligning with European requirements. This process was later conditioned by the national objective of joining the Schengen Area, making Romania an interesting case study for analysing the Europeanisation of this policy.
