Summary/Abstract: Language learning and language teaching have been supplemented by tools and materials that have themselves evolved over the past sixty years. This overview touches upon major new developments in the areas of instructional technology, from the language lab to computer labs and the newer arrival of hand held devices. Parallel to the evolution of new technologies, the goals of language learning, in particular a competency based curriculum, have impacted on the type and usage of new pedagogical tools. Yet, despite significant technological advances, much of what occurs in the language classroom remains rooted in traditional practices.
