Summary/Abstract: On studying the Chinese characters, central attention is paid to the sound language units, to which the characters are related. Any attention is hardly paid to the fact that Chinese characters have a second semiotic level which could be reached through etymological analysis of cultural connotation encoded in their graphic form. This article attempts to show that the history of the Chinese civilization has been recorded not just by means of the Chinese characters but also in the characters themselves.
