Summary/Abstract: Unplanned speech is produced in real time and often contains a significant number of fillers, repairs, repetitions, hesitation markers. This paper examines the use of the Russian markers eto (‘this’) and eto samoe (‘this is’) as “filler words” in contexts where speakers encounter trouble in formulating words during spontaneous speech production. We identify instances in which these markers disrupt predicative constructions or interact with verb prefixes. The findings indicate that these placeholde rmarkers can facilitate corrections within the local structure of discourse. Additionally, we explore the combinatorial nature of preparative substitution and their compatibility with other discursive markers.
