Summary/Abstract: The number of border regions has considerably increased after the last enlargements of the European Union, statistics showing that 30% of the EU population live in these areas. Located at the periphery of the state and suffering from the border effect, these regions have an important role in ensuring national and European security, a role that deeply affects their economic formation and development. Because border regions are strategical for the EU internal and external security, the European Union supports politically and financially cross-border cooperation considering it as a tool to strengthen its security on the long term. The article explores the history of cross-border cooperation within the EU, focusing on the financial support offered by the European Union and on the case of the cross-border cooperation of Romania with its neighbouring countries
