Summary/Abstract: The present paper approaches the neutralization of the correlative pair labial vowels /ɔ - u/ in unstressed position in Judeo-Spanish in contact with Balkan languages. Based on texts in Cyrillic and Latin scripts in Judeo-Spanish, as one of the neo-Balkan languages compared with Bulgarian and Greek as two of the main Balkan languages, the paper discusses the frequent writing of unstressed /u/ like /o/. This writing of /u/ like /o/ is long attested in the Balkans, for instance it is found in Greek inscriptions in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey (Slavova 2004; Vasilev 2017), as well as in the proto-Bulgarian inscriptions with Greek letters (Beshevliev 1992) and continues along the development of Bulgarian until nowadays. The writing of /u/ by /o/ is also detected in Judeo-Spanish texts in Cyrillic and Latin scripts from early XX century in Bulgaria. The discussed examples are analyzed in light of the recent findings (Sabev, Andreeva 2024) as reflecting the phonological neutralization of labial vowels as a Balkan phonological feature.
