Summary/Abstract: The article sheds light on the religious and secular connotations of the concept denoted as Bulg. sram (‘shame’), though historically the concept correlates with other words (stud, styd). The history of the words sram and styd in the Old Bulgarian manuscripts with religious content and New Bulgarian Damaskins is scrutinized and the reason for the loss of the word styd is being traced. The second part of the paper is devoted to the comparison of the semantics of the derivatives of Bulg. sram and Rus. sram- and styd- in various non-religious contexts. The lexical asymmetry between the two languages (Rus. sram is colloquial), thematic spheres which use the lexis of the concept depicted: wedding rituals, ethnobotany, folklore texts, and the gender specifics is emphasized. Bulgarian and Russian polylexical constructions (binoms) are studied (Rus. “styd i sram”, Bulg. “sram i grjah”, etc.).
