Summary/Abstract: The use of automated systems in public administration may sound like a quick way to the top, but it can also create serious risks related to algorithmic bias and discrimination. Examples from countries in Europe already prove that algorithms based on real-world data often reproduce existing social inequalities. This can lead to automated decisions that reinforce discrimination. Insufficient public debate and the lack of adequate mechanisms for institutional and citizen control further increase the risk of such abusive practices.
