Summary/Abstract: With the development of risk sociology, the concept of risk is gradually gaining autonomy and strength in political and institutional discourse. In contemporary society, security policies have moved from being reactive to being proactive, following the maxim that it is more worthwhile to act today because the possibility of catastrophe in the future is so disastrous that we cannot risk by inaction. The text traces the terminological development of the strategic documents in the field of national security with regard to the notion of „risk“, when it appeared, in what context and to what extent it is used in the formulation of security policies in Bulgaria.
