Summary/Abstract: The current work, through a cognitivist approach, aims to explore the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy in the treatment of major depressive disorder, focusing on rumination and rumination elimination techniques. The study focuses on identifying specific assessment and intervention strategies that contribute to ameliorating depressive symptomatology and improving clients' quality of life. The rumination approach in cognitive-behavioural therapy has an important role in the therapeutic process. Rumination becomes problematic when it focuses on causes and consequences, which can lead to maladaptive thoughts, to a maladaptive process, which can maintain the depressive cycle. Rumination is not static, but a dynamic process with interacting thoughts, feelings, and actions. Understanding the antecedents or triggers of rumination provides clues as to what purpose rumination serves in the person's life and helps plan changes to reduce the habit. Knowing the consequences provides clues to its use and functions and helps the therapist and patient consider what alternative actions might replace rumination.
