Summary/Abstract: Nutrition can be regarded as a science that provides rules and guidelines for proper and healthy consumption of food. In hospitals it represents a major component for the patient’s wellbeing. Diets are essential in the treatment of certain diseases but there are situations when the cultural component of an individual’s upbringing, prevents him from benefiting from the necessary nutrients. This paper analyzes some cultural aspects of eating habits in different countries or nations and the way these influence health and education. In order to show support and to promote cultural awareness, clinicians must take into consideration certain food taboos and learn about culturally sensitive matters. This article emphasizes cultural eating patterns pertaining to different civilizations as well as some elements of linguistic creativity demonstrated when naming different traditional dishes.Keywordsfood; nutrition; linguistics; taboos; semantics.* “
