Summary/Abstract: Non-verbal communication, often confined and referred to as body language, has a significant role in our everyday lives as it can improve an individual’s ability to interact or to establish powerful relationships with others. Each body movement, gesture or facial expression may convey a different message or emphasize spoken words. This paper focuses on facial expressions, on their universality as well as on hand gestures and their importance in different cultures around the world. The authors explain how eye contact can influence relationships and how it can represent an essential social ability. It is a key element in connecting to other people, in showing interest or involvement, in defining trust and honesty. As this paper sets forth, hand gestures vary significantly from one culture to another and being unaware of such meanings can lead to serious misunderstandings. Therefore, body language should not be underestimated whether we discuss business environments or everyday life. The uninitiated person might reveal information about what he or she thinks or feels, without even realizing it. Nowadays, we live in an interconnected world, and it is becoming more and more important to give this matter the consideration it deserves.
