Summary/Abstract: The European Union Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has as its main objective to support agriculture and livestock farming, as well as rural development. The aim of this report is to prove, on the basis of the results of the implementation of the CAP in Bulgaria, that it plays a leading role in the economic and social development of small settlements and rural regions, as well as a decisive role in providing employment and raising the standard of living of the population. On the basis of empirical and statistical information from the implementation of the Rural Development Programme in Bulgaria, a critical analysis is made of the impact actually achieved, both at the time of implementation of the measures from a specific programming period and from a current perspective. Due to the lack of a targeted state policy, the CAP is proving to be a major factor in increasing rural competitiveness at national level.
