Summary/Abstract: The sustainability of national defense financing is increasingly critical in ensuring the security and resilience of European and Euro-Atlantic security architectures. Faced with evolving geopolitical threats, countries must navigate economic constraints while balancing national sovereignty and multilateral defense commitments. France, Italy and Germany provide diverse examples of how nations address defense financing, balancing budgetary pressures with strategic priorities. France emphasizes strategic autonomy; Italy faces significant economic challenges, and Germany has recently shifted toward increased defense spending. Each approach highlights the complex interplay between national defense needs and broader security obligations to NATO and the European Union. The case studies reveal that sustainable defense financing requires long-term planning, resource allocation and a collaborative multilateral approach to security. This paper explores how economic challenges impact the sustainability of defense spending and examines the policy implications for maintaining stability and security within European and Euro-Atlantic defense frameworks.
