Terminology in the Latin-Polish editions of Aelius Donatus’s grammar and its impact on the creation of Polish grammatical terminology

Summary/Abstract: The first part of the chapter analyzes the Polish terms present in five selected bilingual Latin-Polish editions of Aelius Donatus’s grammar (1542, 1583, 1595, 1649, 1795) based on material from the 'Historical Dictionary of Grammatical Terms' ("Słownik historyczny terminów gramatycznych", SHTG). Semantic or structural borrowings dominate, and most appear in Polish literature for the first time in the Donatus editions. For the most part, these are accurate translations of Latin terms. In the second part, terms from the Donatus editions are juxtaposed with terms from other grammars, orthographies and dictionaries included in SHTG. Works from the 17th and 18th centuries contain many of the terms present in Donatus, while from the late 18th and early 19th centuries the number of common terms decreases to about a dozen, which can be considered the most lasting influence of the Donatus editions on Polish grammatical terminology.
