Summary/Abstract: This paper is devoted to the transfer of anthroponyms in translation from Russian into Polish as exemplified by historical texts and sources. The author notes the difficulties that this class of proper names causes both in purely translation and in paratranslation activities. Taking into account the properties of anthroponyms as well as practical recommendations and translation solutions, the author suggests a division of the analysed anthroponyms into four groups: Russian anthroponyms; Russified anthroponyms originating from languages with a Cyrillic script, in the case of which it is necessary to establish the source language; foreign anthroponyms originating from languages with a Latin script; and Polish anthroponyms written in Cyrillic, the latter two requiring reconstruction of their primary form. Using examples in each group, possible translation techniques are discussed, in particular: the selection of a recognised equivalent (compliance with tradition), translation, transcription and transliteration.
