- Summary/Abstract:The introductory chapter of the monograph contains basic information about the Corpus of Private Correspondence, which is a significant source of material for linguistic research of correspondence. The corpus, representing 2,000 idiolects, contains private letters that originated at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.It was created at the faculties of arts and informatics, Masaryk University, Brno, and in 2006 was incorporated into the Czech National Corpus (KSK-dopisy). Positive as well as negative aspects of methods used when creating the corpus are described in the text (aspects that are dealt with include e.g. morphological tagging and sociolinguistic annotations), as well as preparing other corpuses of this kind, e.g. a corpus mapping the development of private letters during the 20th century. Attention is paid also to non-corpus processing of correspondence, e.g.creating a data base of marked vocabulary, up to now marginalized from the lexicographic view point A separate part of the chapter indicates trends in linguistic research of private correspondence, carried out up to now at the Department of Czech Language, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Brno.

- Keywords:hypocorism; corpus; lemmatization; word-forming formant; word formation type;
- Summary/Abstract:The contribution deals with hypocorism as a particular sort of anthroponyms, whose word-forming system reflects contemporary word-forming tendencies. The register of hypocorisms from The Private Correspondence Corpus (KSK) became the main source material for this research. The character of this registeris different from the material from questionnaires. The word-forming analysis of hypocorism was oriented on formalist and frequency research. Three basict endencies in forming of hypocorism were separated on the basis of an analysis– the derivation with typical diminutive suffixes, the contraction and the derivation with formants typical for hypocorism. The particular types of derivation are completed with frequency indications and there is also a comparison with hypocorism from SMS-material. The conclusion of paper deals with changes in the natural and grammatical genus and it focuses also on the group of hypocorisms with formant -i/-y.

- Keywords:sociolinguistics; corpus linguistics; Common Czech; Standard Czech; methods of quantitative linguistic analysis;
- Summary/Abstract:Private correspondence is a valuable source e.g. for the purpose of studying the dynamism of relationships between the standardized form of a language and the non-standard varieties. An analysis orientated on quantitative phenomena and based on the Corpus of Private Correspondence [HLADKÁ a kol. 2005] strives to find out how the features characteristic of spoken language used in informal private letters affect the traditional correlation of written form and standard language, which substandard means of expression are more acceptable and less acceptablein this borderline type of written texts and especially to what extent using substandard means of expression in private correspondence depends on the territorial background of the author. Attention is paid to elements from the spheres of phonology and morphology, the main focus being on the differences between Czech, Moravian and Silesian usage. Results of this analysis also contribute to discussions that are currently taking place in present-day Czech linguistics and sometimes lacking a basis of this kind, namely to discussions concerning the extent to which Common Czech expanding to the eastern part of the Czech territory and also to discussions concerning territorial differences in the spectrum of functions of the standard language. Other aspects are taken into considerationas well, namely sociolinguistic aspects, such as the influence of gender, age and education on the choice of means of expression.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with specific sources and methods of historical sociolinguistics and with the possibility of using historical language biographies to reconstruct a language situation: in this paper the specific aspects of the language situation in Bohemia of the 19th century. The paper presupposes that especially private correspondence is a prominent source for historical sociolinguistics because of its interactivity. It holds true also for the narration of language biographies introduced in the correspondence with respect to a specific addressee. The language biography method and its applicability as a method of historical sociolinguistics are demonstrated with the language biography of Friedrich/Bedřich Smetana. In the second part the paper deals with a grammatical analysis of Smetana´s received correspondence. The aim of the analysis is to show which Czech grammatical phenomena are problematic for Czech-German bilingual speakers, who began to learn standard Czech only as an adult.

- Keywords:Božena Němcová’s correspondence; private letter; communication analysis; textual subjects; Czech language about 1850; edition & textology; idiolect descriptions;
- Summary/Abstract:Božena Němcová’s Correspondence was analyzed firstly within the overall characterization of the writer’s style (namely by B. Havránek) and then as a confrontation background for textological research (A. Stich). Since 1990s, it has become subject to communication analysis and interpretation (A. Macurová, J. Janáčková, L. Saicová Římalová): the researchers’ attention has been drawn to the genre of private letter, to the presentation of the writer’s and addressee’s subjects, and to multilingualism. The work on a critical edition of correspondence both sent by and addressed to B. Němcová (2003–2007) induced special interest in the latter letters (R. Adam); besides Czech, newly also German was described (F. Martínek). Other descriptions dealt with word order (E. Hošnová) and spelling (R. Adam). To a minor extent, the correspondence was exploited as a documentary source.

- Keywords:correspondence; dialogue; stylistics; pragmatics; politeness; spoken Czech; syntax;
- Summary/Abstract:This paper begins by discussing the stylistic characteristics of correspondence and emphasizes the concept of correspondence as dialogue (constructed from turns in the form of letters) as well as the inner dialogical character of each individual letter. It points to the increasingly informal nature of letters at presentand to the permeation of spoken Czech into letter-writing. The second part of the paper views the letters of well-known individuals, in this case the love letters of the Czech authors Jan Neruda and Karel Čapek, from a pragmatic perspective. Using pragmatic parameters, the politeness/impoliteness and so-called temperature of the letters are observed. The third part is devoted to a stylistic analysis of contemporary letters, specifically of the typical correspondence of young people (from the Corpus of Private Correspondence, a part of the Czech National Corpus).
