Summary/Abstract: The event binding together the interviews in this book is the May 2020 petition in support of the academic autonomy of the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of the University of Belgrade. Given by thinkers who truly reflect the global academic community, the interviews taken together provide the means to move between past and future in order to better and more actively engage with the present. Stemming from an effort to memorialize one academic institution’s struggle for survival, in effect, these are twenty “thought exercises” that articulate (certainly unfinished) answers to pressing social issues and struggles, laying down a testament and challenge for the future.

- Summary/Abstract:Catherine Malabou, French philosopher and feminist, explores the concept of plasticity as a central idea in her work, defining it as the capacity to both receive and give form—shaping life while setting limits to that shaping, and offering resistance rather than blind flexibility. She connects this to feminist theory, anarchism, and sexuality, arguing that true empowerment must overcome both external and internal forms of domination, using the clitoris as a symbol of non-dominative pleasure and subversion of authority. Malabou also emphasizes the political power of gentleness, framing it not as weakness but as a transformative force of resistance and ethical care.

- Summary/Abstract:Sociologist Éric Fassin argues that populism is a symptom of neoliberalism, because instead of addressing class inequalities, it redirects frustrations towards minorities, thereby blurring the distinction between left and right and opening the way for neofascism. He criticizes France's "color-blind" rhetoric and institutional racism, arguing that racism implies domination and that "racism against whites" is not a valid concept. Intellectuals, he argues, play a key role in preserving democracy because they raise questions that those in power want to suppress, and their persecution is a sign of authoritarian tendencies.
