Summary/Abstract: Sociologist Éric Fassin argues that populism is a symptom of neoliberalism, because instead of addressing class inequalities, it redirects frustrations towards minorities, thereby blurring the distinction between left and right and opening the way for neofascism. He criticizes France's "color-blind" rhetoric and institutional racism, arguing that racism implies domination and that "racism against whites" is not a valid concept. Intellectuals, he argues, play a key role in preserving democracy because they raise questions that those in power want to suppress, and their persecution is a sign of authoritarian tendencies.
