Summary/Abstract: Young Slavistics II is the fifth consecutive publication in a series of annual publications of Doctoral students from the Department of Slavonic Studies in Brno. The book was introduced by a study from Prof. Ivo Pospíšil called “The Problem of the Coherence and Incoherence of Slavonic Literatures”. There are also nine studies by Doctoral students of different Slavonic fields, in which the students examine the issues of context and connection in Slavonic literatures, languages and cultures through the investigation of individual examples. Their research is based on dissertations currently being prepared. Therefore, the publication is a presentation of current research topics solved in Brno by young students of Slavonic studies and at the same time they indicate the trends which this emerging generation of researchers brings to contemporary Slavonic research.

- Summary/Abstract:The present study contains the analysis of the famous contradiction between the Slavophile and anti-Slavophile conception of the Slavonic entity in general and the Slavonic literatures in particular. The author interprets various concepts going back to Pavel Josef Šafařík, Adam Mickiewicz, Josef Dobrovský, Alexander Pypin and Vladimir Spasovich, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Matija Murko, Jan Máchal, Jiří Horák, and Frank Wollman and his polemics with Polish slavists (Stanisław Kolbuszewski) in contrast with the new tendencies linked to the 20th-century modernist and avantgarde currents which complicated the relations of slavisms and antislavisms strenthened by the conflict between the area and linguistic/ethnic character of Slavonic literatures. In the course of the conflicting processes including the First and the Second World Wars, holocaust, intentional genocidal actions and the redrawing of the map of the world the Slavonic question, even the problem of the Slavonic literary coherence arose with an unexpected intensity. The waves of the interest and disinterest in the Slavonic coherence and incoherence continued after 1945 and even much later, after the big turn at the end of the 1980s (in German: „nach der Wende“). It cannot be excluded that this problem, even in its wider context, might become topical again, especially face to face with relatively new phenomena connected with the threat of the new, global wars of religions and civilizations.

- Summary/Abstract:The author of the study elucidates the travelogue as a genre, imagology, and Czech-Slovak relations. She links these topics towards the end where she explores the spread of Czech-Slovak reciprocity via travelogues. The main emphasis of the research is put on a selected travelogue, Wanderings across Slovakia written by Rudolf Pokorný, that provides a basis for this work. Pokorný analyses the mutual relations behind Czech- -Slovak reciprocity that have been influenced by the historical development and the socio- -political situation in the last third of 19th century. However, it was the language that was a key to the understanding of this relationship. This extensive two-part travelogue contains a considerable number of plausible records, that elucidate and illustrate not only personal contacts and relations among individual representatives of national life, but they also represent a valuable historical material in connection with ethnography and the authentic life of ordinary Slovak people.

- Summary/Abstract:The idea of Central Europe is a phenomenon emerging across different social scientific fields. The discussions about Central Europe (re-)emerged in the 1980s when a number of Central European writers, including Slovenian, began to deal with this idea under the influence of Milan Kunderaʼs famous essay. Among the Slovenian writers and journalists, the issue of Central Europe was discussed mainly by Drago Jančar who belonged to the authors supporting the idea of a common cultural area of Central Europe. The paper analyses Jančarʼs essay work in the context of other selected Central European authors such as Milan Kundera, Adam Michnik, Győrgy Konrád or Danilo Kiš. While at the very beginning, Jančar (like other authors) is in favour of the Central European idea, with hindsight he perceives the debates and visions of Central Europe with a certain reserve and prevailing scepticism can be seen in his texts.

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the research is to include Anna Horáková-Gašparíková in the context of Czech-Slovak historiography and to analyse her historical work with the intention to point out the fact that her work is predominated by factography, objectivity and a historical-documentary line. The subject of the analysis is her work published by the press, unpublished articles and notes regarding historical works deposited in the Literary Archives of the Slovak National Library in Martin. At the same time, it is about pointing out relations with the representatives of the current scientific scene which influenced her work. As a source document for the analysis of Anna Horáková-Gašparíková’s contacts with the historical community, we used diaries from the Masaryk family house, taking into account that they were written by the author herself and thus they are subjective to a large extent. In the paper, we point out that Anna Horáková-Gašparíková was more of a historian than a writer and in her historical works, the facts prevail over her significant literary talent.

- Summary/Abstract:Many people and even many linguists look at vulgarisms as something minor, restricted to colloquial style only, however in this paper we try to stress the importance of study of this part of language. We focus on Slovak vulgarisms that are being studied from the point of structure and overall characteristics, adding a typology of these words, based on important articles on this topic. Our aim was to contrast Slovak vulgarisms with those from different languages and our own assumptions. We succeeded to provide a typology of Slovak vulgarisms that is adjusted to the Slovak language specifics, that were highlighted in this study. Also, we found several interesting points in structure of these words and overall characteristics. All these might function as a basis for further study. This paper also discusses what a vulgarism is and the literature that was issued on this topic.

- Summary/Abstract:The Czechoslovak-South Slavic league (established in 1921) played a significant role within the Czechoslovak-Yugoslav relations during the interwar period and so did the Union of South Slavic-Czechoslovak Leagues (established in 1925) in Yugoslavia. The aim of the paper is to map the mutual relations set up in Zagreb through a local league and to describe the activities as well as importance of this association which worked on the convergence and strengthening the cultural as well as economic reciprocity between Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia in Zagreb. Initially, the activities had a manifestation character, later they were more organized. In the following decades, the league became an important part of public life in Zagreb and its surroundings—courses of Czech language, various lectures, theatre and singing performances, celebrations and other cultural events, the league started to publish its own magazine, a library was founded in addition to a reading room and it actively cooperated with other associations (Česká beseda, Československá obec). The collaboration resulted in the building of a Czechoslovak house in Zagreb.

- Summary/Abstract:The writers very often address the basic question of the direction of life, which can be seen in the literature of all countries and times. However, the history and transformations of the society are significantly reflected in the way of looking at human existence. Therefore, this comparative study focuses on the comparison of two authors of contemporary Ukrainian and Czech prose in order to portray the perception of the modern world by young people. The selected novels are closely interconnected by a number of common features: the tendency of pop-literature, the search for one’s own identity in a time of indefiniteness and uncertainty (which is typical for contemporary literature), characters are lost in their ways which lead to nowhere, where a way (depicted as trains and tracks) and losing a home are distinctive images in the authors’ work. Through the exploration of the main characters, their state of mind and thoughts as well as the environment in which they live, we conclude that both the Ukrainian and the Czech writer use their characters to reflect the conscience, nervousness and unease of their generation in the uncertainty of today’s times.

- Summary/Abstract:Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (1821–1881), unlike other Russian writers of the 19th century, never wrote his memoirs but he put them into A Writer’s Diary—a publication that first came out as a part of Grazhdanin (The Citizen) magazine, later as an independent periodical. Based on A Writer’s Diary, we defined six types of memoirs: 1. memories of social events (a criminal case of an abused child), 2. memories of the family circle (brother Mikhail Mikhailovich, nanny Alena Frolovna), 3. memories of important personalities (N. Nekrasov, V. G. Belinsky or I. S. Turgenev), 4. memories of important life moments (Dostoyevsky’s meeting with the Decembrist wives, two reminiscences from the story The Peasant Marey, prisoner abuse in prison), 5. memories of places (Ems, Florence), 6. minor reminiscences (memories of childhood friends, cruelty to a mare, lawsuit). In the study, we dealt with these types of memoirs from the genre and thematic point of view, we stated connections to the biography and links to the writer’s work.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with the search and definition of constitutive assumptions of the war comic genre, which has not been satisfyingly described yet. We proceed from several encyclopaedic definitions, which we do not find efficient and by using other sources as well as our previously published works, we comment and define assumptions of the war comic genre which are mainly the topics, characters, events and functions of the comic book, while we try to determine which of these assumptions or more precisely their specific features, are mandatory for war comics. It is necessary to correct the American definitions which are not only compatible with European experience, especially regarding the date of origin of the genre but also in some other aspects and to synthesize other available knowledge with them. The text is an attempt to make a wider, more comprehensive definition of the war comic genre and its goal is to become the starting point for our subsequent research in this genre field.

- Summary/Abstract:The translation of local-colour elements is one of the most often-discussed problems in the translation of artistic literature. Although it is generally considered that these elements are usually weakened in the translation, they should not be overlooked. As a main working hypothesis, we accept that the culture-specific elements of the translation are mostly lost. To examine this problem, we will use the translatological analysis of selected short stories and novels from the collection of the Bulgarian author Yordan Radichkov—Six Small Matryoshkas and a Big One and Memories of Horses. The main aim of our translatological analysis is to find out how the local colour of Bulgarian works was weakened, deformed or preserved and the possible emotional effect on the Czech readers. The focus of our interest is not only the translation transformations but also the reception of literary works in different language environments.
