Summary/Abstract: This article analyses from a communitarian perspective the impact of the communist totalitarianism upon the capacity of collective reaction. The interest lies especially in the Romanian experience, referring also to some other examples, from a diachronic and synchronic point of view. The communists regime followed a specific route, aiming to remodel the social space, according to its own rules and imperatives, in order to support itself politically. An imported totalitarian regime, the communism was adopted alarmingly quickly in Romania, raising questions upon the conditions that favored this. If in the West the communitarian spirit was translated from the rural to the urban through a special configuration of the city, in order to provide the auspicious background for congregation, in the former communist countries the accelerated processes of industrialization and urbanization pursued and undermined the social cohesion, with a devastating impact in Romania.
