Summary/Abstract: Parental leave can be an effective tool in balancing work and family life, but in order to achieve this goal, its legal construction should be adapted to the new social and technological challenges. This study aims to examine and analyse the parental leave regulations adopted at European Union and national levels, as well as how they respond to the challenges faced by the workers with family responsibilities. The study ends with closing remarks and a list of de lege ferenda proposals.
