Summary/Abstract: Poland stands out among the other countries of the European Union as regards the dynamics of the popularization of education at the secondary and higher levels. However, formal education obtained within the school system seems insufficient in order to rise to the challenges of a rapidly changing economy and the dynamic shifts in the labor market. To fulfil the task, it is necessary to ensure the possibility of constant development of qualifications in a flexible way, based on an individual approach, within the framework of formal, non-formal and informal learning. In this context, the importance of lifelong education undertaken at all stages of professional career increases significantly. However, various opportunities for lifelong education are not widely appreciated in Poland, nor by entrepreneurs, nor by employees. Compared to the inhabitants of other European countries, adult Poles undertake relatively little education. A similar situation applies to Opole Voivodeship, which is one of the regions with the lowest educational activity of adults, with the rate at the level of 30% in the case of formal and non-formal education, 29% – non-formal and 25% – non-formal vocational education. The aim of the article is to analyze the state of lifelong education in Poland and in Opole Voivodeship, to identify opportunities and barriers to the development of this form of education, and then to develop useful recommendations for actions in the field of increasing the importance of lifelong education in Opole Voivodeship. Taking broadly understood actions towards increasing the importance of lifelong education in the development of this region becomes a necessary challenge in the conditions of significant demographic and socio-economic changes in the economy and society of Opole Voivodeship.
