Summary/Abstract: The author traces the development of Czech linguistic terms „nabodeníčko krátké“ and „nabodeníčko dlúhé“ (diacritic marks placed above the letters; „nabodeníčko krátké“ having the form of a dot, „nabodeníčko dlúhé“ having the form of an acute, indicating length) and deals with their position in Czech linguistic terminology. The main part of the study focuses on the explanation why these marks were later erroneously connected with the Latin tractate Orthographia Bohemica (Czech orthography), whose author – probably Jan Hus – provides a suggestion of an orthographic system using diacritic marks.
