A Brief Overview of History Textbook Research

Summary/Abstract: History textbooks are educational resources directly related to the discipline of history, reflecting the content of official history teaching in schools. History textbooks, which are thought to reflect the dominant content and the dominant ideology, are seen as tools that perpetuate culture and ideology, and are believed to reflect the complex relationship between power and knowledge.Through the examination of textbooks, not only how societies have transferred knowledge from past to present, but also their feelings, thoughts and perspectives on other societies are revealed. How and to what extent textbooks are controlled by the state differs from country to country. History textbooks are resources that can be a subject of research at every stage, from the preparation phase, content, presentation, distribution, to every stakeholder such as experts, students, teachers and parents. History textbooks are an important field of research in terms of history, history education and educational history, as well as educational sociology, political science and linguistics. Therefore, there are many studies on history textbooks in different disciplines in the world and in our country. Thus, research on history textbooks should emerge in the world as well as a rich literature in Turkey, about the content of textbooks, practice, problems and solutions are presented. In this study the Georg Eckert Institute, an important center for history textbook research, research approaches in history textbooks, the main issues, examples from Turkey and new trends will be covered shortly.
