Oral History from the Perspectives of Historians

Summary/Abstract: Oral history is a research method that refers to the process of recording and interpreting past events through interviews with individuals who witnessed these events. Oral history, which goes beyond official documents and written sources in historiography and focuses on individual experiences, offers an alternative perspective to historical knowledge. This research aims to analyse historians' perspectives on oral history. Basic qualitative research method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Within the scope of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 historians in different universities. The data obtained were analysed by content analysis method. The findings reveal the opinions of academics about the place of oral history in historiography, reliability debates, the skills that oral history provides students, the advantages and limitations of the oral history method. In addition, most of the participants stated that oral history has experienced various difficulties in the process of academic acceptance. The study offers suggestions for the acceptance of oral history in the discipline of history and discusses the contributions of this method to the production of historical knowledge.
