Summary/Abstract: The article follows the discrepancy between the officious publications regarding the achievements in the rural amateur art activities – a turn towards the lineage of “obrabotki” (adaptations – specific form of some composers’, professional work on musical folklore in socialist Bulgaria, which was started by the National Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances in between 1951 and 1952), and the actual repertoire of the amateur ensembles across Bulgarian villages in 1956. The study is based on publications from that same period, as well as on archival documents (including audio recordings from the Folk Music Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Art Studies). Outlined are the techniques of media manipulation, through which the socialist authorities influenced the development of organized amateur art activities.
