Summary/Abstract: In their pastoral letters, the bishops of the Greek Catholic Church frequently appealed to the congregation to do penance and change their lives. However, they did not just mean the regular reception of the Sacrament of Penance. They stressed that the whole life of a Christian must be penance. At the same time, they underlined prayer, fast, and alms as deeds which lead to real atonement. The Sacrament of Penance is supposed to be the culmination of a penitential life.
