Summary/Abstract: It is not difficult to recognize the influence of ancient poet Marcus Valerius Martialis (40–104) on the poetry of Petrus Royzius (Pedro Ruiz de Moros, 1505–1571), the Latin writing poet of 16th c. in Poland and Lithuania. Despite the time difference between these two personalities, they are similar in their point of view, snappy style and manner of writing. In their poetry one can find similar objects of mockery and a flexible glance at some values. Martialis and Royzius tried to create an immediate dialogue with the reader. An assumption can be made that either Royzius or Marcialis’ primary audience could recognize many realities and nuances of their world-outlook in the verses. The universal things are transferred to a concrete field of an epigram. The surface level of the poetry does not promote introspection because the reader’s glance is continually turned to the ‘other’. However, both poets’ poetry entertains the reader and gives a possibility of having a glance at oneself from outside.
