Summary/Abstract: One is committed to deny the temptation of trying to make a reconstruction while reading ancient literature. Such a reconstruction is impossible. The role of the contemporary reader comes up for recreating the writings. This process is based on the absorption and understanding of the text as a part of some horizons of expectations reflecting the author’s living epoch. Petrus Royzius is a creator of the 16th c. Latin poetry in Lithuania. He wrote his texts being in fact alien to the things he spoke about. Thus we can see the image of Sarmatia (it corresponds to Poland and Lithuania in Royzius’ poetry) from the outside, noticing those things and characters which hardly would have been noticed by native writers.Royzius’ poetry is important because of many authentic historical details.
