Introduction To The Thematic Tafsir

Summary/Abstract: A new type of tafsir called al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī (thematic tafsir) has appeared in the modern age, i.e. in the 20th century. Since this is a new term, scholars have been seeking to define precisely its meaning. There are special works dedicated to thematic tafsir at theoretical and practical levels, which offer their definitions of this type of tafsir. After the preliminary remarks, this article briefly presents the most important contemporary works on thematic tafsirs before addressing in some detail the linguistic and terminological definition of the term al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī. It also gives other names for thematic tafsir.
