THE EMERGENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE THEMATIC TAFSIR

Summary/Abstract: In the introduction, the author states that the term al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī (thematic tafsir) first appeared in the 20th century and argues that more recent authors have adopted two approaches to understanding the historical development of thematic tafsir. One group argues that this type of tafsir was already present in the early history of Islam, albeit not under the term, but in the form of general outlines. Other scholars disagree. The first chapter, entitled Historical development of thematic tafsir, has two subchapters, the first of which examines the thematic tafsir, its outlines and the initial elements in the classical works of the “sciences of the Qur’an”, as well as in commentaries in which – according to the scholars who advocate this approach – it is possible to recognise a particular method of Qur’an interpretation. The second subchapter discusses the emergence of thematic tafsir in modern times, tracing the stages of development, authors, and works that chart its theoretical and practical development. The second chapter presents the main reasons for the emergence of thematic tafsir in the modern age.
