Thematic Tafsir Methodology

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the methodology of the thematic tafsir (et-tefsīru l-mevdū’ī) as it is presented in the works of contemporary authors treating this issue (‘Abdu l-Fettāh el-Hālidi, Mustāfa Muslim, Fethullāh es-Se’īd , El-’Arīd). It concerns the following types of thematic tafsir: 1) thematic tafsir of a Qur’anic term (et-tefsīru l-mevdū’ijj li l-mustalehi l-qur’ānijj), 2) thematic tafsir of a Qur’anic theme (et-tefsīru l-mevdū’ijj li l-mevdū’i l-qur’ānijj), and 3) the thematic tafsir of a Qur’anic surah or chapter (ettefsīru l-mevdū’ijj li s-sūreti l-qur’anijje). This tripartite division has been accepted by most contemporary authors and researchers in the thematic tafsir. At the end of the paper, special methodological rules for thematic tafsir are presented.
