Summary/Abstract: The economic activities of humans have a very adverse impact on the hydrological regime, whether the clearing of forests, ploughing up of steppes, draining of wetlands, irrigation, industrial and urban development or the use of "underground seas". Water infiltrates well into the soil covered with vegetation. Humans behave like a pathogen in the natural ecosystem. There must be enough water available in the nature for wild fauna or flora species. The quality of freshwater is materially affected by the method of land use and the vegetation cover. Especially forests have a decisive role in water purification and retention in ecosystems. We are in the midst of a radical collapse of the biotypes of large rainforests. Moreover, major deforestation continues.
