Legal Terminology in the Ottoman Empire. The Example of the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca (1774)

Summary/Abstract: The translators of the Ottoman Empire and of the Russian Empire faced terminological obstacles which could be even more complicated when a text needed to be translated into more than two languages, which implies the existence of several different realities. This is also the case of a multilingual text containing legal terminology which may differ from one State to another. In this paper, we give examples from the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca signed in 1774 between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. We chose it because it is a trilingual text (Italian, Turkish, Russian) containing articles dealing with law. It is interesting to analyze the strategies used by the dragomans of the Ottoman and Russian delegations, responsible for drafting the treaty, to translate the legal terms used in both Empires.
