Summary/Abstract: The translation of concepts belonging to different politicalcultures is always difficult but not insurmountable. The dragomans ofthe Ottoman and Russian Empires, translators of the peace treaties, didnot escape these terminological obstacles. The concept of State wasone of those difficult terms to translate in the context of an empire. Inthis article, we study the strategies used by these drogmans to resolveor to bypass the difficulties of translation. For that purpose, weanalyze the Italian word Stato used in the original version and thetranslations (Turkish and Russian) of the Küçük Kaynarca Treatysigned between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire in 1774.
