Summary/Abstract: This article gives a brief historic overview of Turkish language interpretation from the Ottoman Dragomans to the Turkish conference interpreters of today. After quickly explaining the etymology of the word dragoman, we focus on the birth of the dragoman institution in the Ottoman Empire, the (re)birth of conference interpreting in Turkey, and the role Turkish conference interpreters can play in the training of their Turkic-speaking colleagues in the region (Caucasus, Central Asia).
