Summary/Abstract: Since the beginning, Neamț Monastery has been the core of literacy, the source anda strong center of the ecclesiastical culture. In addition to other spiritual activities, such astaking part to the daily liturgical program, accomplishing the duties demanded by the abbotsand the spiritual fathers of the monastery, the prayer program in their own cell, and the„rucodelia”, the monks of the Great Lavra of Neamț were also attracted by the HolyScriptures and the Eastern Holy Fathers.From ancient times in the Lavra of Neamț, there were various forms of education, from the"hermitage school" to the „grammar” school. The climax of the theological school wasreached by the brilliant abbot Paisie Velicicovschi who developed a strong hesychasticmonastic reform turning the Monastery into "a new Athos" as Patriarch Daniel stated.In the middle of the 19th century, a theological school was officially opened and developedunder the guidance of Metropolitanate of Iasi and the Department of Public Instruction. Dueto its worthy rulers and well-trained teachers, the seminary of Neamț would become one of thereference institutions for the Country of Moldovia. Before and after the two World Wars, ithad many trials and was closed for long or short periods. The establishment of the Communistregime meant that in the theological school of Neamț, the educational process was disturbedby the interference of the atheist totalitarian system, even trying to politicize it. Many teachersand students suffered from the horrors of the Communist prisons. However, through the effortsof the bishops, the teachers and, as well as, of the vocational students, the Seminary managedto remain among the six schools with seminary education in the country, blending liturgicalactivity with the cultural one and blending the persistant theological education with thedynamic and modern one.
