Summary/Abstract: In recent years the Polish methodology of the state of preservation of book collections has experienced dynamic growth. The purpose of the article is to provide an overview and a critical analysis of three methods of such evaluation in Poland. The overview refers to the scholarly publications and the research of W. Sobucki, H. Rosa, I. Damulewicz, E. Potrzebnicka, E. Jabłońska and others. In Poland three basic methods are currently used, each of which is different in nature and provides different information to the researcher. The simplest and the most popular method is the one which consists in the organoleptic evaluation of a specimen, based on the data which is perceived by the senses of the evaluator. The Stanford method is most commonly applied to the evaluation of the collections of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the application of this method to old prints is associated with certain difficulties. From this method evolved a third one, which in the course of time underwent such transformation that it may be aptly perceived as an independent method i.e. the method of point‑based evaluation, which was developed mainly in reference to the work on items of historical interest. This method enables the inclusion of a greater amount of information about the item under study by means of a selected scale of points. The method of point‑based evaluation according to a scale seems to be the most reliable one, but at the same times it requires further work on the refinement of this method.
